Poetic Exercise

My sister came back from a run and began to do, what I thought, were kind of weird stretches. She's not a Yoga person but it made me think about the human form and how we abuse it, contort it, blame it, hate it, love it, need it. I also really liked this pose because it almost looks as if she were acknowledging a higher being (or being a seal) and, either way, that's pretty awesome.

All of my make up is powder based. The process I follow every morning is to cover a brush with whatever powder I'm using and then tap it a few times to get the excess off before I apply it to my face. By the time I'm finished the sink usually looks something like this. There's usually hair in there as well. On this particular morning I also dropped my liquid eyeliner brush so, literally, everything is in the sink. By the time I finish brushing my teeth, the sink is wiped clean of the evidence, but every morning before I was it down, I look into the sink thinking three things: 1) men don't have to deal with this. 2) what a waste of money 3) oh the societal pressures to look like Heidi Klum.

I recently moved into a new apartment and there is a porch that I am planning for a vertical herb garden as well as several hanging flowers. When I went out to start measuring I saw this little guy in the corner. I'm not inclined to bust out in "Colors of the Wind" but it struck me that this plant was once alive and is now dead. How cavalierly we treat life that is unlike our own. Plants die, humans die. I admit to being a fairly lackluster gardener and killing many an innocent plant, but the way this particular pot was tossed aside and forgotten filled me with a certain amount of guilt and sadness.

This morning I enjoyed a delicious bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios. I decided, after initially pouring the bowl, that I would add some banana for, like, health. After I added an entire banana's worth of slices, the bowl was overflowing and I lost a few O's. The old Psalm, "My Cup Runneth Over" immediately came to mind and I thought about how blessed I am not only to have a full bowl of cereal but to have so much more that it cannot be contained. I also love the colors in this photo. I ate outside on my porch and the white bowl adopted a blue hue in the morning light. The blue with it's complementary yellow made for a pleasing combination of colors.

I love taking photos of instruments in use. Not people playing the instruments but the way that the actual instrument is used. I always wished that I knew how to play the piano so, to me, it's a very daunting instrument. My roommate's electric keyboard, while far less intimidating than a grand, still seems to exert this power and dominance over me. I often feel as though it's mocking me. I tried to create an angle where this relationship was adequately expressed. In the background are RockBand instruments that I do feel comfortable playing. The synthesized nature of all three instruments do have a correlation, but I can't escape the feeling of smallness around a piano.

In all honestly, I don't know what this is. For a party thrown last weekend, my roommates filled several jars with unique looking contents and, after almost a week, this one has settled into, you know, this. This photo is a fairly extreme close up, seeing as this entire bottle is no more than four inches high. Thoughts of underwater sea life, experimental art and Harry Potter (that was the theme of the party) came to mind. What drew me to this was not the memories or conscious thoughts it elicited, however, but the calming effect it has on me. cool colors suspended in a beautiful glass bottle. I have no desire to know what it's actually made out of.

7 Peaks is scheduled to open here in the next few weeks and once it does it will not be seen deserted again until Fall. So often empty theme parks or playgrounds can draw negative emotions from viewers. I felt the opposite while driving by these colorful slides. The weather warming and the sun just beginning to go down, I could sense the anticipation and potential oozing from this place. I took a few still pictures on a tripod looking beyond the gate, but I felt that by taking the picture while moving I was able to better capture the excitement.
I love to embroider and I often find myself sketching some rough patterns or ideas while I'm bored at work. Although these are very rudimentary, rough ideas, they are the first step to creating something beautiful. The process, the rough edges, the baby steps, the imperfections are all a part of the larger process. What a great metaphor for life! Also, please note the amazing about of white-out used...
